I founded ecoTextual in 2013 to offer copyediting, proofreading, content, and information services to publishers, businesses, nonprofits, and individuals.
My graduate degrees in English and Library Science led me to faculty positions at two universities and a private secondary school. During my sixteen years of teaching English composition and literature, I copyedited and proofread many thousands of manuscript pages. Grading hundreds of students’ writing perfected my ability to identify errors and to improve another person’s text (as well as my own).
Ecology, wildlife, outdoor recreation, and the environment in general have been interests of mine for as long as I can remember. I come from a family of Ohio County, Kentucky, farmers—Hatfields specifically (you'd better not be a McCoy). My youth was spent roaming my rural surroundings; camping in popups and sleeping on pickup beds; riding my bike all over Daviess County, Kentucky; milking cows; slopping hogs; feeding chickens (and collecting eggs); and tramping around state and national parks. Over the years, I’ve raised gardens and livestock; constructed orchards; brought in hay; worked tobacco; bushhogged fields; plowed, disked, planted, weeded, and harvested farmland; and restrained angry raptors during rehab treatments. I dearly remember my childhood pet pigs City and Town, and the unequaled refreshment of my grandmother’s well water, straight from the bucket.
But what really has sharpened my sense of environmental responsibility and urgency is raising my son, whose future, of course, is my primary concern. By providing professional services to environmentally minded clients, I get to parent by example while helping to support the health of my family and our planet. It’s a perfect combination for me.
I currently work and reside just south of Birmingham, Alabama, with my wife, Amy, my son, Goodman, and our lunatic dog, Hiram J. Buffington Fluff Esq. III.
